Along with jeans, flannel shirts, and Derby jackets (navy or brown), a favorite thing for a Red Eye to wear was a blue Löwenbräu beer hat.  It was the 70s and not the 50s so we did not consider ourselves a gang, but we were one of many groups or cliques on campus.  I do not recall if we called ourselves anything, but others called us Löwenbräu buddies.

I have no idea who bought the first ones or how it was decided, but I think it had something to do with availability.  Between the 7-11 store and the liquor store in Washington Square, there were just enough hats for all of us.

As far as brand loyalty . . . come on, get real.  We had years to go before we were 21.  We drank what we could get.  But often it would be Löwenbräu or Miller High Life.  I remember a couple of special occasions we sprung for Heineken (big time man).  Other brands were:

  • Heileman's Special Export

  • Henry Weinhard's Special Reserve

  • Mickey's Big Mouth

  • Schlitz Malt Liquor

  • Lucky Lager (hey - we were poor and it was only $2.09 a 12 pack!)

Hey - I have brain cells missing . . . fill in the blanks by emailing me your memories.

No apologies - No Regrets!  Remember people . . . it was a different time. Underage drinking and the inhalation of the herb superb was not evil or wicked until the Reagan-era and the "War on Drugs.".  It did not result in gang fights, drive by shootings or act as a gateway to "harder" narcotics.  It did result in some damn fun times and great memories.  If you want to pretend that the 70s were different, remember the words on the Animal House cake float . . . "Eat Me."  Don't judge the past using the accepted norms of today.
